International Drive Project opens connectivity for trade and growth in Rio Grande City

Rio Grande City is entering a new era of connectivity. The International Drive Project is underway and will extend FM 755 to Rio Grande City's port of entry. Along with the construction of State Loop 195, these projects will strengthen the city's role as a gateway for trade with Mexico and open up new business opportunities on both sides of the border.

International Drive will strengthen Rio Grande City's position as the fastest, most direct route from Monterrey into Texas, linking to a modern highway network that continues to grow across the region. TxDOT and the City of Rio Grande City are investing about $5.2 million in the project. As travel becomes easier for trucks and visitors between the two countries, local businesses will gain better access to cross-border trade, making the city an even stronger place for business growth.

State Loop 195 will connect the region's key routes. TxDOT began work on the first phase of this 17-mile, four-lane highway in December 2025, linking FM 755 to FM 3167 in Rio Grande City. The full project will cost about $240 million and be built in three phases, eventually running from FM 755 in Rio Grande City to the U.S. 83/Loma Blanca Road intersection near Roma. According to TxDOT, the highway will serve as a relief route for U.S. 83, moving trucks and commercial traffic north of downtown and reducing congestion.

This is the right time for Rio Grande City. International Drive will connect the city directly to FM 755, which then links to the new Loop 195. This smoother route will make freight and trade between Mexico and Texas easier. As a result, these connections help the community attract new businesses, support existing industries, and continue to grow.
