Backgroundchecks.org has named the City of Rio Grande City as one of the safest cities in Texas and is ranked in the top 10 of their 2019 “Safest Cities to Live in Texas” Report.
“Our law enforcement partnerships go along way and make a difference. I credit our local, state, and federal partners in our law enforcement community, along with Mayor Joel Villarreal, our City Commission, and City Manager, who support us in our efforts every day,” said Chief Noe Castillo, Rio Grande City Police Department. “The Rio Grande City Police Department, will continue to serve our citizens, and those who travel though our community with their safety in mind.“
The City of Rio Grande City ranked 8th out of 2, 929 of Texas cities with a population of over 10,000.

This is a testament to the leadership of Chief Castillo and the great work our officers do to ensure the safety of our community," said Mayor Joel Villarreal. "We thank them for their efforts for making Rio Grande City a safe place to live, work, and enjoy life."
In determining the ranking, the study used the most recent FBI crime statistics and U.S. Census data to create the state ranking. Their process for determining the rankings used three main variables; violent crime rate, property crime rate and the number of employed police officers.
