Rio Grande City achieves recognition at annual conference



Rio Grande City Mayor Joel Villarreal and City Commissioners Hernan Garza, Alberto Escobedo, Flor Flores and Rey Ramirez joined city staff in attending the Texas Municipal League’s (TML) 10th Annual Region 12 Training Workshop in South Padre Island, Texas on May 17-18, 2021.


As members of TML and participants of the Region 12 conference, everyone in attendance received training and information on topics of open government, ethics, legislation, emergency management, and other themes impacting the region.


During the conference, the City of Rio Grande City received the “Take The Gloves Off” award for its work to overcome COVID 19 challenges and achieve success in those efforts.

Rio Grande City Mayor Joel Villarreal was also elected Vice-President during the TML Region 12 meeting held on May 17. He is now one of three 2021 TML Region 12 officers which include McAllen Commissioner Victor “Seby” Haddad, TML Region 12 President and McAllen City Secretary Perla Lara, TML Region 12 Secretary.


The Texas Municipal League started in 1913 to provide advocacy, legal support and training services to city leaders. Membership is voluntary and open to any city in Texas. There are currently 1,164-member cities. TML Region 12 is comprised of Brooks, Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Kenedy, Starr, Willacy and Zapata counties.
