Grab your boots and round up the family and head over to the 12th Annual Chili Showdown Cook-Off set for Saturday, February 1, 2020 at the Historic Quiosco (Kiosk) in Downtown Rio Grande City. Cooking teams from around the Rio Grande Valley will go head to head and compete for RGC’s Chili Showdown honors.
There is no entry fee for the pan de campo, fajita and bean categories. And for anyone feeling lucky, there are now two $50 Jackpot categories: chili and chicken wings. This year also features a People’s Choice Best Chili Contest. The public is invited to taste and cast their votes for their favorite chili. Tickets are $1 per taste or $10 to taste all. Judging starts at 5 pm. All proceeds benefit the Rio Grande City Public Library.
The event will feature live music from Buzzkill, Zentido Norteño, Los Mas Romanticos, and The Hometown Boys next to the historic Britton Avenue Quiosco where couples can dance the night away.
Other activities this year include a jalapeño-eating contest at 5 pm hosted by the Rio Grande City Main Street. Entry fee is $5. The Rio Grande City Public Library will have a chalupa bingo from 2 pm to 4 pm. Cards are 4 for $20. Children can enjoy free kiddie rides starting at 5 pm.
